Perhaps like no other innovation in recent building technologies, mass timber and its increasing use as a structural solution in taller and larger buildings has elicited strong and varied reactions. There is almost universal positive reaction to its warmth and conversely there is almost an equal degree of concern regarding its impact on established industries and it’s safe use as structural solution. In this context of contrast the Keynote session will focus on two mass timber projects: the Arbour for George Brown College, and the new Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation Headquarters & Multi-Tenant Commercial Building in Toronto. The session will discuss the technical, regulatory and supply chain context of these two projects in light of two very different solutions and the role that hybrid solutions have played in the final resolution of the designs. These contrasting projects and processes, one designed via an international design competition and the second designed and envisioned collaboratively with a client, reveal that we are indeed at the beginning of a new and exciting journey of innovation and possibilities en route to our collective low carbon future.
